Nigella seed, a main ingredient in Paanch Phoran

This uniquely Bengali (east Indian) spice mix is used to season many dishes. It is a blend of five (paanch) spices and lends a lovely aroma when added to a dish.


  • Cumin seeds
  • Fennel seeds
  • Nigella seeds
  • Fenugreek seeds
  • Mustard seeds


  • Mix all the above in equal quantities and store in an airtight container.

Family loved it, Member grtgrace

Our family of 8 loved this dish. My older children are vegetarian and but don't like really spice stuff so I reduced the pepper and chilli powder. Our 2 youngest are autistic and picky eaters but they both had seconds. This was also a nice size meal we had enough for the whole family served over white rice.
