A Little Taste Of India

The Bottom Line

Great recipes, good pictures - the recipe for a good cookbook. A Little Taste Of India offers easy-to-follow and fuss-free recipes for popular and everyday Indian foods and some recipes for preparing basic ingredients like masalas (spice mixes). The book has gorgeous pictures (for every recipe!) that not only depict stages in the preparation of each dish but also give the reader little glimpses of life in India. I loved this book and worked up quite an appetite reading it!

  • The pictures in this book are beautiful.
  • The book does a great job of depicting India and its food culture.

Guide Review - A Little Taste Of India

On the cover flap of A Little Taste of India are several claims:
  • "…includes flavours from all over India..."
  • "…there are special features on key foods that give Indian cuisine its distinctive character..."
  • "As you will see, there's a whole lot more to Indian fare than just the humble curry."

The book is faithful to all these claims! It does a great job - with both the recipes and the gorgeous pictures - of giving the reader a glimpse of life in India. Food forms a very important part of this life and in this book, culture and food blend seamlessly.

The recipes cover all the regions of India and both popular and everyday foods are included. Instructions are easy to follow and fuss-free, so should not be a problem even for beginners. Every single recipe is accompanied by pictures! The pictures with each recipe show the finished dish and strategic steps that would be difficult to explain just in words. The book also contains handy recipes for preparing basic ingredients like spice mixes, paneer (cottage cheese), ginger juice, etc.

Scattered through the book, are interesting and informative features about some key foods in Indian cuisine which give important background information and facts like how to eat or serve a dish. The glossary at the back of the book is another helpful feature.

The dessert section could have been larger given the vast variety of Indian desserts there is and Indians’ love for sweet stuff. Other than that, I enjoyed A Little Taste of India.
